CULVER CITY, Calif. — In the early morning hours of July 2, California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Cano, ID 23555, died in the line of duty after suffering a suspected medical emergency resulting in a crash.
At around 12:28 a.m., Officer Cano and his partner were driving south on Bristol Parkway, north of Green Valley Circle, while transporting a person in custody to the West Los Angeles CHP Area office. For reasons still under investigation, Officer Cano lost control of the patrol vehicle, which left the roadway and struck a tree.
Emergency crews from the Culver City Fire Department responded quickly. Both officers were taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The person in custody was taken to Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey by fire personnel.
Officer Cano’s partner suffered minor injuries because of the crash. Tragically, despite the lifesaving efforts of emergency personnel, Officer Cano was ultimately pronounced deceased at the hospital.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee offered his condolences and support to Officer Cano’s loved ones and fellow officers during a news conference this morning at the West Los Angeles Area office.
“We are devastated by the loss of Officer Cano, who gave his life while serving the people of California,” said Commissioner Duryee. “His dedication, courage and commitment to public safety will never be forgotten. We stand with his family and our CHP family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Officer Cano, 34, is survived by his wife and parents. He has been a member of the CHP since November 2023.
The CHP’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is leading the ongoing investigation. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
