Commercial Operations Unit

The Golden Gate Division Commercial Operations Unit (COU) works hard to ensure commercial vehicles on California roadways are maintained to safe standards and the drivers operating them are properly licensed and safe to operate their vehicle.  The Golden Gate Division COU also has a Commercial Industry Education Program (CIEP) Officer.  The CIEP Officer is available to visit businesses with commercial vehicle fleets to discuss various safety topics, such as vehicle loading rules, pre and post-trip inspections, rules of the road, and other commercial vehicle specific topics.  The CIEP program is free for businesses to utilize and is a great tool to increase the safety for your fleet.

The COU is composed of North and South Regions, encompassing all nine Bay Area Counties.  The COU is staffed by 24 Mobile Road Enforcement (MRE) Officers, two Sergeants and one Staff Services Analyst.  The MREs perform duties such as variance load escorts, proactive enforcement, and operation of four platform scales.  Some MREs are also specially trained in various commercially focused topics such as hazardous materials response, radiological materials, and environmental crimes investigations.
