The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Contra Costa Area is proud to serve the Contra Costa County region providing safety, service, and security to over 1 million residents, commuters, and tourists each day.  As part of the CHP’s Golden Gate Division, our office patrols Interstate 680, State Route 4, State Route 24, State Route 242, and all unincorporated county roadways.  We offer a number of programs aimed at keeping you safe on the road and on the highway.  Contact our office for information on how to safely buckle your children in their car seats, teach new drivers the challenge of the road, or learn some tips for driving at night, in bad weather, and in high volume traffic.  You can help us by driving defensively and safely, obeying the posted speed limit, giving enough room between you and the car ahead of you, using your turn indicators, and being courteous on the road.  You can follow us on Twitter: CHP – Contra Costa @320PIO or friend us on Facebook: CHP - Contra Costa.  To enroll in our upcoming traffic safety classes and events go to chp-bayarea.eventbrite.com.  Thank you for taking the time to visit our website, click Programs and Services above to learn more about the many traffic safety programs CHP offers.

The 320 Explorer Post was established in 2015 to introduce young men and women to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the field of law enforcement. Since its inception, the Explorer Post has served as a gateway for young individuals interested in pursuing a career as a CHP Officer. Each week, Explorers receive professional training and mentorship from CHP Officers in topics such as Vehicle Code and Penal Code violations, DUI investigations, use-of-force scenarios, weapons safety and handling, and Non-Lethal Training Ammunition (Simunitions) exercises. They also engage in vehicle placement training and other scenario activities designed to simulate real-world situations encountered by CHP Officers. These sessions provide not only essential skills for law enforcement but also invaluable preparation for success at the CHP Academy. Many former Explorers have excelled in the academy and transitioned into rewarding careers as CHP Officers, equipped with the experience and knowledge gained through this program.

In addition to preparing participants for the CHP Academy, the Explorer Post offers opportunities to give back to the community. Explorers work alongside CHP Officers, assisting with local outreach and educational programs. Guided by the CHP’s motto of providing the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security to the public, the Explorer Post prepares participants for the challenges and responsibilities of protecting California’s communities. If you’re passionate about a future with the CHP but are not yet eligible to apply, joining the Explorer Post is the perfect way to gain a competitive edge and start your journey.
