The Fort Tejon Area office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is responsible for patrolling 1,300 square miles of freeways, roadways, and unincorporated areas across three counties. This includes nearly 400 miles of county roads and over 20 miles of Interstate 5 (I-5)—a vital corridor for commercial vehicles and travelers alike.

With a strong emphasis on safety and enforcement, the CHP Fort Tejon Area maintains high visibility patrols to ensure a secure roadway environment.  During the winter months, the office works closely with Caltrans to keep I-5 open and operational during snowstorms, which frequently impact the region.

A particularly challenging stretch of I-5, known as “The Grapevine” (from Fort Tejon Road to Grapevine Road), features a steep 6% grade that is heavily traveled by commercial motorists. To enhance safety, the northbound lanes include a strictly enforced 35-mph commercial speed zone.  Additionally, two emergency escape ramps—one on each side of the freeway—provide critical fail-safes for runaway vehicles.

The Area's dramatic elevation changes, ranging from 8,847 feet down to 541 feet, offer breathtaking views of valley fields, the Pacific Ocean, and the Channel Islands, making this region as scenic as it is essential for transportation.
