Tuolumne County encompasses approximately 2,229 square miles and has an estimated 55,000 residents. Many of these residents live within unincorporated small towns spread throughout the county. Sonora, the county seat and only incorporated city, is the largest community and “hub” of the county. Additionally, the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau reports approximately two million day use visitors to the county annually and approximately three million overnight visitors annually. Many of those visitors enjoy the county’s natural vistas and settings for hiking, water skiing, horseback riding, rafting, camping, snowmobiling, boating, snow skiing, fishing along with other outdoor activities. In addition to all of the exciting outdoor activities, Tuolumne County is host to two full size Casino Resorts with entertainment and amenities for the whole family including casual and fine dining restaurants, a trampoline park, bowling, indoor golf simulators, and a full 18-hole golf course.
The geographic make-up of Tuolumne County is rural and mountainous with response times to the most remote boundaries measured in hours rather than minutes. Tuolumne County elevation levels vary from 300 feet above sea level in the western region to over 9,600 feet above sea level at Sonora Pass.
The Sonora Area has traffic safety responsibilities for Tuolumne County (excluding Yosemite National Park) and a small portion of northern Mariposa County. The areas of patrol and crash investigation responsibility include 72 miles of State-Route 108, 56 miles of State-Route 120, 37 miles of State-Route 132, all Tuolumne County roads, the northern portion of Mariposa County roads and approximately 2,859 miles of graded national forest roads.
