The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Orange County Communications Center is the lifeline of highway safety, managing thousands of emergency calls each month to keep California’s roads safe. Staffed by highly trained public safety operators and dispatchers, the center operates 24/7, 365 days a year, ensuring rapid and coordinated law enforcement response, assisting motorists, and addressing critical situations with precision. As a vital link between the public and CHP officers, the center plays a crucial role in maintaining highway safety, emergency preparedness, and efficient incident management across Orange County.

 

What We Do:

  • Answer 911 calls for highway emergencies

  • The center handles calls for hundreds of miles of highways as well as roadways in unincorporated areas, making it one of the busiest CHP communication hubs in California. (>200,000 911 calls in 2024—6th largest in the state)
  • CHP dispatchers undergo intense training to handle high-pressure situations, including multitasking between multiple radio channels and emergency calls. Some dispatchers have worked at the center for decades, dedicating their careers to public safety.
  • CHP dispatchers often help locate missing persons, dangerous drivers, and even stolen vehicles on the highways! The also provide support for units specializing in retail theft, auto theft, and human trafficking.
